CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

Were You Abused as a Child in the Jehovah’s Witnesses?

We protect our clients' stories, identities, and maintain the highest standard of confidentiality.
Child sex abuse impacts nearly every religion, and Jehovah’s Witnesses are no exception. According to their website, there are over 8 million Jehovah’s Witness followers across the world and more than 100,000 congregations. Now, they are at the center of child sexual abuse scandals spanning across decades.
Reports reveal Jehovah’s Witnesses and their parent corporation, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, have hidden and dismissed sexual abuse claims within their congregations. Former Jehovah’s Witnesses have come forward and testified that elders and members in their congregation brutally molested and raped them as children and were never reported by Jehovah’s Witness officials. In many cases, Jehovah’s Witness elders even discouraged members from reporting abuse. Sexual abuse survivors claim the Watchtower Society has collected nearly 10,000 names of alleged sexual abusers in the Jehovah’s Witness congregations.
If you or a loved one were sexually abused as a child by a member of the Jehovah's Witness congregation, contact Jehovah's Witness Child Sex Abuse Lawyers today. Recent laws have been passed that may allow you to pursue justice against the Jehovah’s Witness congregation that silenced your abuse, no matter how long ago it happened. We're here to support and fight for you during this difficult time. Call our sex abuse attorneys today to learn about your legal options.
ABUSE CLAIMS

Secret Abuse

Two-Witness Rule

TWO-WITNESSES ARE NOT REQUIRED IN THE U.S. TO SUPPORT AN UNREPORTED SEXUAL ABUSE CLAIM TO AUTHORITIES.
Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Watchtower Society claim they are under no “secular” legal requirement to report sexual abuse claims. If cases of sexual abuse are reported, the Watchtower Society says there needs to be two or more witnesses to the abuse in order for the claim to be credible. But, two-witnesses are NOT required in the U.S. judicial system to support an unreported sexual abuse claim to authorities.
This alone is a horrifying way to treat abuse victims. Sexual abuse claims need to be taken seriously, as dismissing them can drastically damage a child’s development and trust for the rest of their lives.
Additionally, there is rarely ever an additional witness to child sexual abuse other than the perpetrator. Ordering for a second witness makes it nearly impossible for a sexual abuse claim in the Jehovah’s Witness congregation to be viewed as credible.

Corrupt System

Abuse cases were seldom reported and, instead, hidden away by elders in the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Allegedly, the Watchtower Society instructed Jehovah’s Witness elders to report cases of sexual abuse directly to them rather than local law enforcement to avoid legal action. ABC News even reported the Watchtower Society sent out a letter to elders saying to keep sexual abuse allegations amongst fellow elders, because “wordly people are quick to resort to lawsuits if they feel their ‘rights’ have been violated.”
Claims say in 1989 the Watchtower Society mandated for elders to send the names of sexual abusers in the church to them in little blue envelopes for the Society to collect, review, and stow away. These reports never saw the light of day again. Thousands of sexual predators over the years have been allowed to walk free because of this corrupt reporting system.

No Cooperation with Authorities

The Watchtower Society has held out for years on releasing the names of sex predators to the police.
Over the decades, Jehovah’s Witness congregations and the Watchtower Society have collected the names of thousands of alleged sexual predators. These names have never been turned over to the authorities.
In fact, the Watchtower Society was ordered to turn over the files to a court or face heavy penalty fines. To this day, the Church has not turned over the files and remains millions of dollars in debt. The Jehovah’s Witnesses chose to maintain the face of their Church instead of protecting innocent lives.
